A relative pronoun is a type of pronoun that introduces a relative clause and connects it to a main clause. Relative pronouns include words such as “that,” “which,” “who,” “whom,” and “whose” (Wallwork, 2013). Relative clauses can serve various functions in a sentence, such as modifying a noun or providing additional information about a noun (Probert, 2015). The interpretation of relative pronouns can depend on factors such as context and the type of relative clause (Belz et al., 2010). Some relative pronouns are anaphorically referential and are interpreted as referring back to a previously mentioned noun (Belz et al., 2010). The acquisition of relative clauses by language learners is influenced by the similarity between relative clauses and simpler sentence structures (Diessel, 2009). Different languages may use different pronouns to form relative clauses, such as reflexes of Proto-Indo-European pronouns (Probert, 2015). Relative pronouns can also be used to form definitional noun phrases (Al-Mehairi et al., 2017)

This section delves into the intricacies of “whom” as a relative pronoun, focusing on its role as an object pronoun within sentences. Understanding how “whom” functions and its contexts of use is essential for constructing grammatically precise and contextually appropriate sentences.

Role of “Whom” as an Object Pronoun
Examples and Usage “She met the person whom the movie was about.” In this example, “whom” serves as an object pronoun within the relative clause. It refers to the person about whom the movie was centered.
