English for Academic Purposes (EAP) is a specialized field of language instruction that focuses on the linguistic and communicative skills required to succeed in higher education. Unlike general English, which prepares learners for everyday social interactions, EAP is tailored to the specific demands of academic environments (Hyland, 2006). It is a branch of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), designed to address the distinct language needs of students, researchers, and professionals in various academic disciplines (Jordan, 1997). The core purpose of EAP is to equip learners with the tools to navigate the academic world, from reading complex texts to producing sophisticated written and oral work.
In a university setting, EAP addresses a broad range of skills beyond basic grammar and vocabulary. It covers the conventions of academic discourse, including critical reading, academic writing genres (e.g., essays, research papers, literature reviews), effective note-taking, and public speaking for presentations and seminars. A key component of EAP is a needs analysis, which ensures the curriculum is directly relevant to the students’ academic goals (Gillett & Wray, 2006). This goal-oriented approach is what distinguishes EAP from General English language teaching.
